  • Project Overview:

The CNU College of Dental Medicine Tenant Improvement project, located at 2201 Broadway in Sacramento, California, marks a significant step in California North state University’s mission to expand healthcare education. Initiated in 2023, this transformative tenant improvement repurposes an existing facility into a modern dental education and clinical services hub. The project is designed to support both academic instruction and community-based dental care, equipping students and faculty with advanced clinical resources while providing the public with access to essential dental services.

Dental Equipment Installation: Integration of dental chairs, imaging machines, suction and vacuum systems, and digital charting stations tailored to educational workflows.

Mechanical and Electrical Upgrades: Implementation of energy-efficient HVAC systems, enhanced lighting, emergency power, and specialized plumbing infrastructure.

Administrative and Support Areas: Construction of offices, academic lounges, reception zones, and student resource areas to support operational and academic needs.

Technology and Network Infrastructure: Installation of secure IT systems to support electronic health records, remote instruction, and diagnostic imaging software.

Construction Timeline

Phase 1 – Planning and Permitting (Early 2023): Program development, regulatory coordination, and design documentation.

Phase 2 – Demolition and Core Work (Mid 2023): Interior strip-out, utilities-routing, and construction staging.

Phase 3 – Systems and Structural Upgrades (Late 2024): Installation of dental utilities, MEP enhancements, and structural reinforcements.

Phase 4 – Final Buildout and Finishes (2025): Fit-out of dental operatories, teaching labs, finishes, and technology systems.

Phase 5 – Inspections and Occupancy (Expected 2025): Final regulatory sign-offs, commissioning, and phased academic/programmatic move-in.

Sustainability and Compliance

Energy Efficiency: Use of LED lighting, smart HVAC zoning, and building controls to reduce energy consumption.

Water Conservation: Low-flow fixtures and efficient sterilization equipment contribute to reduced water usage.

Health & Safety Compliance: Infection control features include antimicrobial surfaces, proper waste handling zones, and negative pressure areas in clinical environments.

Regulatory Conformance: Fully compliant with local zoning, building, and healthcare facility codes and standards

Community Impact

The CNU College of Dental Medicine’s new facility expands access to dental education and healthcare in Sacramento. In addition to training the next generation of oral health professionals, the clinic will serve the public—particularly underserved populations—with preventative and restorative dental services.
